BEYOND THE HEADLINES · THE MAKING OF YOUNG LACE

Before the name.
Before the headlines.
There was a boy.

Fort Smith, Arkansas. A childhood shaped by grown-up realities. A journey that would carry a young boy into the federal justice system—and a life that continued long after.

FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS

Some childhoods
move too fast.

Before anyone knew me as Young Lace, I was a kid in Fort Smith trying to make sense of the world around me.

I grew up with a mother doing her best, family members who influenced me in different ways, and an environment where I encountered adult conversations, decisions, and pressures long before I understood their consequences.

Like a lot of young people, I looked at the people around me for clues about success, respect, and what it meant to be somebody. Some of those examples helped me. Others led me in directions I would spend years trying to understand.

This is not about pretending those choices did not happen. It's about telling the story of how a child came to see the world the way he did.

“You can know what happened to someone without knowing what happened before it.”

THE MAKING OF YOUNG LACE

A name can become
an identity.

Young Lace was more than a nickname. It became part of the identity I carried into a world that moved faster than I was prepared for.

My teenage years took me beyond Fort Smith, including time in Houston. I was drawn to independence, image, opportunity, and the sense that I could make my own way. At that age, I did not fully appreciate the difference between feeling grown and being ready for adult consequences.

The memoir The Making of Young Lace is where I intend to tell that journey in greater detail—in my own voice, with its contradictions, relationships, turning points, and lessons.

A CHILDHOOD INTERRUPTED

Then everything
changed.

While I was still a teenager, I entered the federal justice system. Being prosecuted and sent away at such a young age changed the direction of my life and left consequences that did not end when I came home.

I know my past is part of the public record. I also know that a legal record cannot explain every influence, every fear, every lesson, or everything that happened afterward.

I don't ask people to ignore that chapter. I ask them to recognize that it is one chapter in a much longer story.

FATHERHOOD · WORK · GROWTH

The man I chose
to become.

My life did not stop with the years I lost. I became a father, built business and creative projects, and learned that responsibility looks different when someone else is depending on you.

Raising my son has been one of the most meaningful parts of my life. It gave me a new way to think about the guidance a young person needs—and the kind of example I wanted to set.

My work in entertainment, entrepreneurship, and storytelling reflects different parts of that continuing journey. They are not replacements for my past. They are part of what came after it.

JD YOUTH FOUNDATION

Let the lessons
reach someone else.

I believe experience carries a responsibility. If something I lived through can help another young person think twice before following a similar path, then telling my story has a purpose beyond myself.

Through the JD Youth Foundation—a charitable initiative I operate personally—I want to encourage young men and women to understand how quickly decisions can change their futures.

Giving back to Fort Smith has also taken a practical form through Thanksgiving turkey giveaways and community service. Those moments matter because they connect the place where my story began to the kind of impact I want to make now.
